Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings. Civil engineering is the oldest engineering discipline after military engineering and it was defined to distinguish non-military engineering from military engineering. Civil engineering is known as the mother of all engineering, it is the oldest, broadest, most simple and useful of all engineering sciences. Being a broader field civil engineering is divided into the following sub-categories and fields….

  • Geo technical Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Transportation Engineering
  • Water Resource engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Earthquake Engineering
  • Urban Planning
  • Geo Informatics

The college has provided a good grooming ground for civil engineering by making available ISO certified instruments in various well-equipped laboratories. The consultancy cell undertakes construction material testing, soil testing, mix design, design of hydraulic structures and surveys works in this region.

It is the branch of engineering in which after the completion of degree, students have the possibilities to join supervisors, structural engineers, site engineers, government, engineers, inspection engineers, and quality control engineers etc. The department offers 4 year engineering course in b. tech civil engineering with intake capacity of 120 students.

Civil Engineering Works

  1. Building Construction
  2. Pavement Construction
  3. Bunker & Silo Construction
  4. High Rise Construction
  5. Dam & Reservoir Construction
Geo Technical lab

It was started under civil engineering department in 2009. Since its inception, all the faculties, students, research scholars and associated lab staff have actively contributed to its development. The laboratory is equipped to perform all the necessary basic characterization of soils, rocks and geo synthetics along with several advanced testing facilities. The vision of this division is to utilize the state-of-the art knowledge for solving problems related to subsurface. A typical geotechnical engineering laboratory helps in identifying the engineering behavior of geo materials (soils and rocks) and byproducts such as fly ash etc. There are different physical, chemical and geotechnical properties determined in the laboratory that is required for identifying the geo materials. This information is used by geotechnical engineer for designing the type of foundations, earthworks such as dams, embankments, tunnels, reservoirs, pavement sub grades, and specialized applications like waste containment systems. The preciseness of such design is entirely based on the experimental information obtained from a geotechnical laboratory. Therefore, geotechnical engineering laboratory has a great role to play in rendering the subsurface a safe and stable load bearing medium.

Surveying laboratory

It is equipped with the instruments and tools that students use throughout the surveying course. Students learn techniques for gathering field data with both traditional and modern instruments and demonstrate their proficiency on weekly lab exercises and a comprehensive semester project and final exam. Each lab group – typically three students – has a dedicated set of instruments to use, including auto level, theodolite, and total station. Each group also has level rods, tripods, tape measures, chaining pins, and other common surveying tools and ancillary equipment. The lab serves as office space for the surveying instructor and teaching assistants, so surveying students have direct access to help for material discussed in lecture and lab.

Transportation laboratory

Transportation engineering section of the civil engineering department is involved with multi activities related to highway engineering in particular and transportation engineering in general.

Environmental Engineering laboratory

Environmental engineering laboratory is a state of the art, well-equipped laboratory that is able to perform most types of laboratory analyses. The environmental lab is used by many different disciplines across the campus including the departments of civil and environmental engineering, chemical engineering, geology, chemistry, biology, and environmental studies. Each department uses the laboratory for both courses and research which provides students with hands-on experience in environmental analysis methods. We routinely analyze for a variety of organic and inorganic parameters including disinfection byproducts; taste and odor compounds in drinking water & other compounds. In addition, the laboratory is well equipped with refrigeration, incubators, water baths, fume hoods, balances, and ph meters, cod digesters, drying ovens, a muffle furnace and other standard equipment.

Construction Material Testing laboratory

CMT offers a variety of testing and engineering services to both the commercial and residential construction industries. Our engineers have worked throughout the world and are supported by a group of engineering technicians that carry the highest level of experience and certifications in the state. Building product manufacturers need independent technical support to prepare their products and processes for the rapidly evolving, heavily regulated construction market. Element experts provide that support with precise, accredited testing and inspection, whether onsite or in the lab.

Engineering Geology laboratory

Research and teaching in the field of geology and mineral resources engineering involves the use of a number of laboratories for the processing and analysis of materials with widely varying properties. The department utilizes several laboratories together with collaborating departments, and operates a number of labs in concert with sinter. In addition to the department’s research projects and those of students, these facilities are used to conduct a considerable degree of contract research. All laboratory operations do require some degree of technical assistance, maintenance and assembly, and key contacts for each area are listed on subsequent pages. In addition to the department’s technical staff, the facilities and staff at the nt-workshop (faculty of natural sciences and technology) are actively utilized. The nt-workshop is a modern mechanical workshop located adjacent to our laboratories on the first floor.
