Library and Information Science is a profession that is full of people passionate about making a positive change in the world, and they tend to be wildly happy about what they do.

Librarians bridge the gaps that exist between people, information and technology. In their professional lives, librarians and information professionals work to:

  • Design and develop knowledge-organization systems
  • Create reader’s advisory resources to encourage young students to develop a lifelong love of reading and learning
  • Help scholars locate archival and other resources crucial to their work
  • Identify sources of assistance in family and personal crises

Library and Information Science (LIS) established in 2019 in under of faculty of social science with aim to provide LIS education to the students through effective teaching and practical training. The department is working with the vision to educate individuals for career as librarians, library information officers, archivists, information scientist and knowledge managers. The students are trained to undertake instruction, research and service-oriented programmes that require current emerging information technological developments and market requirements. Presently the department is offering one year Bachelor of Library and Information Sciences (B. Lib. I. Sc.), one year Master of Library and Information Sciences (M. Lib. I. Sc), and Ph.D. courses in Library and Information Science. The department has dedicated and experienced faculty members who delivered latest LIS education to the students. So far the department has produced more than (54) library and information professionals placed at prestigious positions in reputed institutions. The major areas of research in the department are ICT applications in libraries, user-studies, job satisfaction of library professionals, oriental libraries, conservation and preservation of manuscripts and so on. The thrust areas of the research are emerging trends and technologies in the libraries such as digital libraries, IITs, public libraries, collection management, e-shodhsindhu consortium, and information services for divyang, open access initiatives and growth of ICMR libraries in digital era, ICFRE, cost benefit analysis in agricultural libraries, etc.

The department has been established with the following objectives:

  • An understanding and appreciation of vital and pervasive role of Information as an essential tool in all development activities.
  • An understanding of the application of Information Technology in the handling of information in the libraries and information centers.
  • Full comprehension of the global nature of information for proper co-operation, coordination among the countries.
  • To equip the students with necessary skills of information science, background for designing, implementing, operating and managing an information centre or a documentation centre or a library, pertaining to any field such as R & D, business & industry, media, academic institutions & government departments, etc.
