Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineers make things move. Mechanical engineers design and develop all machines with moving parts – anything from vehicles like satellites, cars, trains and aircraft, to plants for generating clean power, medical equipment like pacemakers and micro-scale pumps, and machines, such as robots, that make other products.

We believe that industrial training and experience are vital components of every student’s professional development. As part of our continuing commitment to providing a balanced education, we will help you to gain experience or sponsorship with an industrial company as either an industrial year or summer placement student during the course, if this is what you are looking for. We offer the services of an Industrial Liaison Tutor, whose role is to help you and your fellow students to forge links with industry by providing opportunities for vacation work, year-out placements, sponsorships, etc, and to act as a ‘match-maker’ to bring together final-year students and recruitment staff from suitable companies. We also invite companies to enrich our teaching by contributing to seminars, live projects and case studies. Opportunities for both year-out and vacation placements are advertised openly on the Mechanical Engineering industrial liaison notice board, and are available to all qualifying students.

Description of Mechanical Engineering Laboratories

Teaching Laboratories :

Teaching laboratories provide under graduate students with first-hand experience with Mechanical Engineering course concepts and with the in order to explore methods used by engineers and researchers in their discipline. Strength of Materials Lab.

In this laboratory, students will have the opportunity to apply loads to various materials under different equilibrium conditions. The student will perform tests on materials in tension, compression, torsion, bending, and impact. These conditions and/or constraints are designed to reinforce classroom theory by having the student perform required tests, analyze subsequent data, and present the results in a professionally prepared report.

The machines and equipment used to determine experimental data include universal testing machines, torsion equipment, spring testing machine, compression testing machine, impact tester, hardness tester, etc. Data will be collected using Dial indicators, extensometers, strain gages and strain indicator equipment, as well as load and strain readouts on the machinery and graphing capabilities to print relevant plots for analysis. Dynamics of Machines and Machine Design Labs These labs are well equipped with instruments used in Dynamics of Machines and Machine Design.

Thermal Engineering Labs :

The objective of the thermal engineering laboratories is to introduce the student the fundamental theories and the industrial applications of thermodynamics, IC engines, RAC, heat and Mass transfer, and fluid mechanics. This laboratory supports the courses for the undergraduate studies. Thermal Engineering is a specialized sub- discipline of Mechanical Engineering that deals exclusively with heat energy and its transfer between not only different mediums, but also into other usable forms of energy. A Thermal Engineer will be armed with the expertise to design systems and process to convert generated energy from various thermal sources into chemical, mechanical or electrical energy depending on the task at hand. Obviously, all thermal engineers are experts in all aspects of heat transfer.

Machine Shop :

Following are the objectives of this lab:

  1. Demonstrate the usage of metrology lab equipment.
  2. Know the working principles of different instruments.
  3. Familiarize different machine tools used in production floor.
  4. Impart hands on experience on lathe, drilling, shaping, milling, slotting, grinding and tool and cutter grinding machines.
Fluid Mechanics lab :

This lab introduces student’s practical knowledge of behavior of fluids which they are earlier studied by using mathematical equations. It involves study of various properties of the fluid, such as velocity, pressure, density and temperature, as functions of space and time. Fluid mechanics is the branch of physics which deals with the properties of fluids, namely liquids and gases, and their interaction with forces. The lab is equipped with different flow measuring set-ups such as venturimeter, orifice-meter, mouth piece, rotometer, flow through pipes, centrifugal pumps, Hydraulic jump, turbines etc., where students can visualize the basic theory of working of the flow meter.

HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER LAB:

This lab helps the students to understand all the 3 modes of heat transfer, namely conduction, convection and radiation practically. These experiments also pave way for inculcating certain innovative skills in the students making them to use the above experimental setups as starting point to take up higher level experimental studies in Heat Transfer, and last but least, mass transfer.
